For Affinity Water

High tech survey and control of invasive mussels

Prior to maintenance work on a reservoir, we used an underwater drone to check for an infestation of quagga mussels.

Advanced methods
In advance of a statutory scour test, we were asked to determine whether quagga mussels were in a reservoir of around 0.45km2.

Monitoring a live feed
Using a remote-controlled underwater drone and live-streamed footage, we surveyed the reservoir’s underwater structures. We analysed a total of 65 minutes of footage, and found no evidence of quagga mussels, which allowed Affinity Water to undertake the scour test without risking the introduction of quagga mussels to the wider environment. We recommended periodic monitoring of the reservoir, to ensure infestations are dealt with at the earliest opportunity.
