Exciting news from Panshanger Park. The innovative use of Iron Age pigs to create thousands of miniature ponds is a remarkable step forward for wetland conservation in Hertfordshire, where only 1% of the land is currently wetland. These vital habitats boost biodiversity and help combat droughts and floods.
Tim Hill from Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust emphasises the urgency: Protecting rare wetlands benefits wildlife and humans. With 1 in 6 species at risk, we must restore these ecosystems and raise wetland coverage to 3%.
Maydencroft, in collaboration with the Countryside Stewardship Scheme, Panshanger Park, and Tarmac, is excited to contribute to an enriching project focused on enhancing the biodiversity of Iron Age pigs. This initiative celebrates the historical significance of these remarkable animals and aims to create a vibrant ecosystem that reflects the landscape's rich heritage. We hope to showcase these pigs' vital role in the environment through dedicated efforts while fostering a deeper connection between nature and history.
