Hannah, Assistant Ecologist, recently surveyed to determine whether great crested newts were present in a series of lagoons at a water treatment works near Oxford.
She provided an update on the survey, explaining that she and her colleague, an Ecologist, set out floating bottle traps in the evenings around the lagoons' banks.
Once the sun had set, they used high-powered torches to look for any newts beneath the water's surface and searched for any eggs on the banks. They returned to the traps around sunrise or 10-12 hours after setting them out to see what was inside.
During their latest survey, they found a frog and a couple of smooth newts while using the torch, and a few smooth newts were in the bottle traps. They still have more surveys to conduct and will provide an update if they find any great crested newts.
