Enhancing biodiversity through new woodland creation

Maydencroft was commissioned to design, deliver, and manage a woodland creation project within the M25, transforming an area of limited tree cover into a thriving habitat for wildlife. The landowner’s vision was to improve biodiversity while leaving a lasting environmental legacy.

Project scope

The project focused on establishing a diverse new woodland using native broadleaf species. Key works included:

  • Planting a mix of sessile oak, hornbeam, silver birch, and sweet chestnut
  • Planting in clusters by species at 2-metre spacing to reduce interspecies competition and improve timber quality
  • Designing curved planting rows to integrate with the landscape and reduce visual impact
  • Linking new woodland with existing ancient woodland blocks to enhance habitat connectivity
  • Ongoing establishment management to ensure survival, biodiversity gains, and soil and water benefits

Challenges

Creating woodland within an already developed or partially covered landscape requires careful species selection, planting design, and soil management. The project also needed to balance ecological, recreational, and potential commercial objectives.

Solutions and expertise
Maydencroft applied a tailored approach, considering:

  • Soil type, climate, and disease-resistant species selection
  • Planting design to maximise biodiversity and landscape integration
  • Long-term management to support native wildlife, soil health, and water regulation

Outcomes
The new woodland now provides valuable habitats for birds, mammals, and invertebrates. It strengthens landscape connectivity, improves ecosystem services such as water retention and soil health, and ensures long-term sustainability. The project was funded through the England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO), reflecting the high standard of design and delivery.
