Supporting access and conservation in North East woodlands
Maydencroft was commissioned by the Woodland Trust to improve access and conservation management at South Park Wood, near Prudhoe, Newcastle. The project demonstrates how carefully designed infrastructure can support both operational needs and ecological protection.
Project scope
The project involved constructing a 550-metre forestry-grade track to provide safe and sustainable access for maintenance and visitor management. Key works included:
- Installation of culverts and drainage ditches to manage water flow
- Construction of a parking area and turning areas for vehicles
- Installation of a hessian sack headwall for a 900mm pipe
- Coordination with ecological requirements to minimise environmental impact
Challenges
Building forestry tracks in ancient or sensitive woodland requires careful planning to avoid damage to habitats, control water runoff, and ensure long-term durability. The project also needed to balance access requirements with wildlife protection.
Solutions and expertise
Maydencroft’s team combined civil engineering and environmental expertise to deliver a sustainable solution:
- Precision installation of culverts and drainage systems to prevent erosion
- Use of forestry-grade materials suitable for heavy machinery and long-term use
- On-site ecological supervision to ensure protection of the surrounding habitats
Outcomes
The completed track provides durable, low-impact access that supports ongoing woodland management while protecting natural features. It demonstrates Maydencroft’s ability to deliver infrastructure that meets both operational and conservation goals.
