Student college arboricultural asset and safety inspection

Maydencroft was commissioned by an environmental, land-based college, to conduct an arboricultural asset and tree safety inspection survey of all trees within the boundaries of their 30-acre Enfield campus. This included trees within the open gardens and show gardens that featured various coniferous and broadleaved trees.

The survey identified 1091 individual trees and 59 groups of 167 different species, of which 19 species were rare or uncommon in the UK.

The survey was conducted during winter and tested our identification skills when identifying deciduous species. Each tree was allocated a risk rating, and our findings included a recommendation for remedial tree work only where necessary.

The species identified ranged from common to rare, from dwarf conifers at 0.5 m height to 30 m + deciduous trees.

The volume of trees was much higher than previously expected, and as all trees were to be plotted individually where possible, the survey took longer than anticipated.

As well as sharpening our tree identification, surveying such a range of species was a satisfying challenge.
