Restoration plan for wildlife around a sewage works

As part of an ongoing improvement project at Bicester Sewage Treatment Works, we cleared out the filtration tanks, and restored the site so wildlife could thrive.

A new home for invertebrates and flora
Our consultants created a restoration plan for the site, to create a haven for various wildlife, with an emphasis on invertebrates. This included the installation of pre-planted coir rolls to encourage the development of floral species like yellow flag iris, purple loosestrife and lesser pond sedge.

It also allowed land for the reed bed to establish naturally, with a composition of 80% phragmites and 20% typha. Existing willow within the filtration tanks were coppiced, with a percentage treated with glyphosate to prevent re-growth.

A plan to move forward
This restoration plan was then used by our own contracting division, to carry out the specified works. The filtration tanks are now much improved for wildlife, and also look much more attractive.
