For Princess Helena College

Gertrude Jekyll orchard restoration

We planned, secured funding for and planted an orchard, based on the original design by famous 19th century horticulturalist Gertrude Jekyll.

Using its heritage to inform the future
For Princess Helena College in Hertfordshire, we created a restoration plan for their Gertrude Jekyll-designed orchard. Our comprehensive management plan was devised using information from the Historic Environment Record, plus old maps, photos and accounts from past students.

We created a design that was entirely in keeping with Jekyll’s original vision, using local fruit trees and daffodils. Our contractors planted the orchard and installed deer fencing. Funding was secured through an Environmental Stewardship, and included both implementation and ongoing maintenance.

“This is just the beginning - thanks to Maydencroft’s expertise, we are now working with the team on a much bigger project, to develop a Parkland Management Plan for the entire estate.” Dr J. Bentall, School Bursar
