Sustainability

As a family spirited rural company, we're strongly invested in taking care of the people and the world around us.

Traditional values, with a future-thinking approach

We’re an ecologically-focused business that does much more than you’d expect from conventional landscaper, tree surgery and grounds maintenance firms.

We have biodiversity and habitat protection running through our veins – and we’re a place where consultants and field teams work together to find the most sustainable approach in everything we do.

We’re more than a
tree surgery firm.
Our arborists and consultants take loving care of precious trees and forests for now and the future.

We’re more than landscaping consultants. We’re environmental experts who look at the most biodiverse ways of working with what’s already there.

We’re more than a grounds maintenance company. Our estates division finds a balance where people and wildlife can effectively share beautiful open spaces.

Taking care of our environment

We've planted more than half a million trees Our carbon footprint is minimal (if not negative), thanks to over half a million trees and hedge plants we've planted since 2007. But we're always looking for ways to reduce it further.

Recycling runs through everything We recycle all our wood waste into biomass power (that's enough to heat 250 houses every year). We also encourage the use of recycled plastics for all kinds of trade and residential construction, through Revive Recycled Plastics, one of our family of brands.

Our teams sustainably manage more than 10,000 acres of woodland Wherever possible, we look at continuous cover as a method of management. That means ensuring woods are earning effectively and being managed in a sustainable 'little and often' way, which doesn't create big habitat changes at the expense of biodiversity or other woodland activities. Our MD Tom Williams is also chair of the Royal Forestry Society Home Counties Division.

We embrace clean energyWe're always working towards improving our green infrastructure. We not only run our own premises on energy from a solar photovoltaic (PV) system - but we also encourage fuel-efficient driving with a driver performance league table. Our fleet of vehicles meets current emissions regulations, and we're in the process of adding more electric cars.

Rare species are thriving on our landAll land under our ownership is within Environmental Stewardship agreements, which requires us to meet strict expectations to maximise biodiversity. It also means that rare species such as the Grey (English) Partridge are able to thrive on our land - a real success story.

Furthering rural employment

We're helping empower our people Over the years, we've provided our employees with many thousands of qualifications through our bespoke CPD scheme - and we have an ongoing programme of rural skills training for everyone in our team. Employing the right people, helping them to develop, giving them ownership and retaining them is central to everything we do.

Our apprenticeship schemes are going strongAs a large rural employer, we're in a unique position to offer rewarding apprenticeships to many young people. And we've created a tailored apprenticeship programme in partnership with Shuttleworth College, the Berkshire College of Agriculture and Capel Manor College.

A commitment to 'earn and learn' initiativesAs members of The 5% Club to help drive 'earn and learn' initiatives for young people, we've pledged to having a minimum of 5% of our workforce enrolled on formalised apprentice, sponsored student and/or graduate development schemes.

We welcome visits from local schoolsWe know that rural life is a key component of a happy childhood - so we welcome visits from local schools and youth groups. As such, our MD Tom Williams is qualified under the Countryside Educational Visits Accreditation Scheme (CEVAS). If you represent a school or a youth group and would like to arrange a visit - or if you're a school-leaver keen to pursue a specialised, rural apprenticeship - please get in touch.

Our links with local collegesOur MD Tom Williams regularly guest-lectures at local colleges, and is very committed to championing young people throughout the company.
