Landscape and Ecological Enhancement Plan: RBWM

The client: Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead

The site: Braywick Leisure Centre, Maidenhead.

The brief: Produce a LEEMP for a new leisure centre development on a former golf course. The purpose of the LEEMP was to clearly set out all considerations related to (a) the protection of retained habitats, (b) the construction phase mitigation required for particular species, (c) the creation and management of new habitats and ecological features, and (d) ongoing ecological and landscape monitoring.

Our solution: The LEEMP established a detailed methodology for the protection of retained habitats and included method statements for working near amphibians, reptiles and bat habitat, with an ecological clerk of works required to be present for vegetation clearance. The LEEMP also included for a number of habitat creation and enhancement elements including the creation of swales and attenuation ponds, and the installation of log pile and deadwood hibernacula for reptiles and invertebrates.

The result: A five-year maintenance plan set out all operations and monitoring related to new and retained habitats. Construction activities have commenced with ecologists present during site vegetation clearance.
