Invasive species survey & control: Giant Hogweed

The client: Affinity Water

The site: The site is located close to Radlett, Hertfordshire and is bordered by the River Colne which has numerous patches of Giant hogweed along its length.

The brief: To survey the extent of Giant Hogweed on site and implement immediate control, initially to prevent further spread, with the long-term aim of eradicating Giant Hogweed from the site within five years.

Our solution: Maydencroft provided a certified surveyor to map the extent of Giant Hogweed on site and a qualified technician to treat the species. Following this an “Implementation Plan” for the ongoing management and eradication of Giant Hogweed was produced.

The result: Giant hogweed was identified onsite during a routine Tree Safety Inspection, it was apparent that it had spread from adjacent land. Following its identification, the swift action by Affinity Water and Maydencroft meant control was implemented at the optimum time of year and prevented the plants from setting seeds. A variety of control methods were used including; severing the tap roots of plants adjacent to the water and spraying plants away from the river with a non-persistent herbicide. Maydencroft and Affinity Water will continue with monitoring and control, aiming to completely eradicate Giant Hogweed from the site within five years.
