Countryside Stewardship Scheme: Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation

The client: Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation

The site: Letchworth Garden City is located in North Hertfordshire and was the first garden city laid out using the principles established by Ebenezer Howard the English founder of the garden city movement. The estate associated with the garden city is managed by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.

The brief: To compile a successful higher tier application to Natural England’s Countryside Stewardship for both woodland and agricultural land within the ownership of the Heritage Foundation.

Our solution: We surveyed all woodlands and agricultural land to assess baseline conditions. Working with the Heritage Foundation, Natural England and tenant farmer we designed a scheme that would benefit the local community, and enhance biodiversity whilst not restricting agricultural production.

The result: The successful scheme has enabled hundreds of hectares of flower rich meadows to be created, existing orchards to be managed including creation of new orchards, ponds to be rejuvenated and former arable land to be reverted to meadows managed through grazing with traditional breeds.
