A non-native species is a plant or animal that is found outside its natural range because of direct or indirect introduction by humans. There are 1,377 non-native plant species within the UK but only 108 (8%) are considered invasive.

Invasive non-native species spread and out compete our native plant and animal species, threatening biodiversity, ecosystems and habitats, resulting in serious environmental and economic damage. Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 states that it is illegal to plant or allow certain invasive non-native species to spread into the wild, and to release or allow certain non-native animals to escape into the wild.
