Queensmead Lake: Evaluation of access provisions
The Client: Affinity Water
The site: Queensmead Lake is an operational reservoir located close to the River Thames in Staines. The site covers an area of approximately 6.9ha and is surrounded by trees, shrubs and grassland. It is a strategically important resource in Affinity Water’s operational network and as such sensitive to any pollution or contamination event. Although closed off to the public, the site does support a controlled level of recreational access by the Affinity Water Angling Club.
The brief: To evaluate current access provisions at Queensmead Lake and to explore the potential for making changes to accessibility.
Our solution: We carried out an on-site assessment, baseline data search, review of literature and policy, case study research, and consultation with Affinity Water staff in order to establish a full understanding of the opportunities and constraints at Queensmead Lake. Four access scenarios were analysed against the elements of the site most sensitive to change, and the results used to form impartial conclusions.
The result: A comprehensive and balanced report to inform any future access decisions for Queensmead Lake and other sensitive operational sites.
