Princess Helena College: Gertrude Jekyll orchard restoration plan
The client: Princess Helena College, Preston, Hertfordshire.
The brief: Princess Helena College approached Maydencroft to produce a restoration plan for the Gertrude Jekyll designed orchard, at the college on the historic site of Temple Dinsley.
Our solution: A comprehensive management plan was written by Maydencroft Consultants, which brought together information from the Historic Environment Record, old maps, photographs and accounts from past students, to create a design in keeping with Jekyll’s original vision and using local varieties of fruit that could be enjoyed by the school and the local community. Funding though Higher Level Stewardship was secured to help implement the project and provide support for the on-going maintenance. Maydencroft contractors were employed to plant the orchard, install deer fencing and plant daffodils.
The result: “This is just the beginning - thanks to Maydencroft’s expertise, we are now working with the team on a much bigger project, to develop a Parkland Management Plan for the entire estate.” Dr J. Bentall, School Bursar
