Heathrow Terminal 5: cycle route improvements

The site: Part of a network of cycle route improvements surrounding Heathrow Terminal 5.

The brief: Maydencroft was commissioned by the Groundwork Trust Thames Valley on behalf of Surrey County Council and Spelthorne Borough Council to restore a collapsed and flooded section of the route.

Our solution: We felled approximately 20 dangerous overhanging poplar trees and dug out the blocked and collapsed culvert and demolished and re-compacted the existing path. We re-built culverts with reinforced concrete-filled hessian sand bags. The entire section of the route was then built up, incorporating the culvert with MOT type 1 granite. Finally, it was finished with a top dressing of granite dust and compacted.

The result: The entire section has been raised above the flood-risk area to act as a causeway and is an easy to use and aesthetically pleasing location. Transforming a hazardous section of the route from a flooded mess to a brand new, level and safe path.
