Camfield Place Feasibility Study

PROJECT BRIEF

Maydencroft Limited was commissioned to undertake a Feasibility Study for a private historic estate located near Hertford in Hertfordshire. The aim of the study was to help the landowner better understand the potential for the estate to benefit from emerging markets related to the trade of biodiversity units and carbon credits, and to review other grant funding opportunities that may be applicable.

ASSESS

A BNG Baseline Survey was undertaken by our Ecologists using UK Habitat Classification System, Modular River Physical (MoRPH) survey methodology and Natural England’s Biodiversity Metric 4.0 to generate a baseline figure for the site. Soil Sampling was undertaken across the parkland and arable land with the aim to understand the current organic carbon content of soil and use this information to determine the potential for soil carbon improvement, and how this may relate to the market potential for carbon credits. A detailed Hydrological Assessment looked at the current condition of ornamental lakes and associated watercourse, and what works might be required in future.

Results from all studies were written up in a Feasibility Study report, modelling the potential habitat creation and enhancement options that could be considered appropriate to the historic estate, and how best these could be funded through trade of BNG and/or carbon credits, or alternatively through grant funding programmes such as Countryside Stewardship and the English Woodland Creation Offer.
